German re-commerce specialist Momox has completed the automation of its Leipzig logistics site, installing a pouch-sorter system that can process up to 250,000 used articles a day. The company announced the project on 6 October.

The Leipzig warehouse spans more than 100,000 m², employs over 1,200 people and holds close to 20 million second-hand items. Its pouch sorter runs 29,000 suspended pouches: items are fed in one at a time, sorted and held until an order is complete — on average within about an hour — before being routed to new packing stations. A downstream parcel sorter assigns finished orders to one of 20 destinations at more than 6,000 orders an hour, handling between 50,000 and 70,000 orders a day.

Scaling second-hand resale

Founded in Berlin in 2004, Momox buys used books, CDs, vinyl, DVDs and video games directly from individuals through its national platforms and app, and resells them, it says, at up to 70% below new prices. The company employs more than 2,100 people and says it has bought and resold over 400 million articles to date.

Chief operating officer Tim Kellermann said the automation removes many of the manual tasks employees previously handled, while chief executive Claudia Frese said the Leipzig upgrade lays an essential foundation for the company’s future growth.
