German WMS specialist proLogistik has added an AI-powered picking agent to its Logistar warehouse management suite. Early deployments are already in production at several customer sites, targeting tighter order batching and shorter operator walking routes. The roll-out signals a fresh wave of operations-grade AI features moving from pilot to commercial software.

Inside the Picking Agent

The agent works on top of real-time activity data and historical order lines. It clusters orders, simulates picking scenarios through a digital twin, then proposes the route and grouping it estimates will minimize operator travel. The objective is not headcount reduction. It is throughput per operator per shift, with smoother flow between zones.

By plugging into the running WMS rather than sitting alongside it, the agent avoids the integration tax that has slowed earlier AI optimization projects. Operators see the new batch and path directly inside their existing terminal interface.

Commercial Path

proLogistik plans to package the AI agent as an add-on to Logistar. The pricing model leans toward usage-based access rather than one-off licences. That choice matches the broader shift among WMS vendors, who are increasingly selling AI modules as recurring revenue layers on top of core platforms.

Operators evaluating the move should still test the agent against their actual SKU profile and pick density. Picking AI delivers very different ROI on slow-moving spares versus fast-turn e-commerce assortments.

Market Context

Logistar now competes in a crowded field where AI picking, slotting and labour planning are the next battlegrounds. Suites from Manhattan, Körber, Generix and Blue Yonder are all racing to ship comparable agents. The advantage will go to vendors that can prove repeatable lift across heterogeneous client setups, not those running the flashiest demos.
