Alibaba.com and DHL Group have signed a memorandum of understanding to build AI-driven cross-border logistics tools aimed at small and mid-sized businesses. The agreement was unveiled at Alibaba’s CoCreate 2026 convention held last week in Los Angeles. It pairs the Chinese e-commerce group’s agentic AI, built for the commercial side of trade, with the German logistics operator’s freight forwarding reach.

What the Partnership Covers

The two companies want to test how AI can help smaller firms handle the parts of international trade that usually slow them down. That means supplier relationships and sourcing new partners, quoting and booking freight, then tracking shipments through to delivery. Cross-border trade keeps getting more complicated, much of it on the regulatory side, and the stated goal is to make it simpler, faster and more accessible for companies that lack large logistics teams.

How It Works in Practice

The deal lays the groundwork for connecting DHL Global Forwarding’s quotation and booking services with Accio, Alibaba’s agentic AI platform. Accio launched in late 2024 as an AI-powered B2B sourcing engine. It grew fast. By March it claimed more than 10 million monthly users worldwide, and Alibaba rolled out a plug-and-play edition called Accio Work aimed squarely at SME operations.

That version bundles a set of pre-configured specialist agents. Some automate compliance and customs work, others handle sourcing and price negotiation, inventory tracking, or long-term sales channel tuning. Whether SMEs adopt these agents at scale is the real test ahead.
