Jungheinrich has taken a minority stake in Navflex, a robotics startup developing AI-driven systems that automate the loading and unloading of trucks inside warehouses. The intralogistics group wants to fast-track automation at one of the supply chain’s most stubborn bottlenecks: the loading dock.
Why the Dock
Loading and unloading remains heavily manual. Trailers vary, load carriers vary, and the working space is tight, which makes the area hard to automate safely and reliably. Jungheinrich notes that demand for robotics at the dock is running high precisely because these labour-intensive tasks collide with a shortage of qualified staff and constant pressure on throughput. Putting capital into a specialist is a faster route to a working product than building the capability alone.
The Technology
Founded in Germany and headquartered in the United States, Navflex builds navigation hardware and software for automated loading and unloading trucks. Its systems learn and steer in real time using AI, adapting to mixed trailers and awkward layouts rather than relying on fixed routes. Jungheinrich has already begun trialling trucks from its own range, automated by Navflex, at selected customer sites. The aim is a robust end-to-end solution that reaches the market quickly.
Market Context
For Navflex, the deal is about reach. Chief executive Chuck Stovall said cracking Europe required a partner able to handle industrial-scale rollout, ramp-up and global service, which is where the two companies complement each other. The partnership pairs a venture’s automation and AI with an established manufacturer’s footprint. Whether dock automation finally moves from pilot to standard equipment may hinge on exactly this kind of pairing.
